The pure research underlying Advanced Glazings Ltd.'s transparent insulation material was conducted in the early and mid 1960s by Dr. K. Terry Hollands, a pioneer in renewable energy and the inventor of transparent insulation. Development of the transparent insulation material was continued in the Advanced Glazings Materials lab at University of Waterloo and at Advanced Glazings Ltd. Today, research at Advanced Glazings Ltd. is focussed on creating materials that will meet the challenges of a rapidly increasing worldwide demand for sustainability and reduced energy consumption. Significant discoveries are being made in the properties of materials that may be used in the manufacture of transparent insulation. With the materials that have been available over the past 50 or so years, excellent thermal insulation came at the expense of greatly reduced light transmittance. At this time, a transparent insulation with R=10 (U=.10) and visible light transmittance of over 95% is now within sight.
