Introduction

SoleraTM is designed for architects and engineers who wish to deliver high quality diffuse natural light to building interiors. It represents a truly green product choice that will enhance any sustainable design and healthy building project. Solera scatters incoming daylight, filling interior spaces with soft, glare-free diffuse light. SoleraTM also utilizes Advanced Glazings' unique 'Honeycomb Transparent Insulation' technology, originally developed for solar energy applications to provide an optimal balance of light transmittance and insulation value. HTI technology lets SoleraTM achieve maximum daylighting effectiveness while maintaining thermal integrity of the building-envelope. Solera is glass. It represents a unique long-life-cycle alternative to conventional short-lived plastic-based diffuse glazing products. Solera'sTM material components are highly recyclable and avoid the recyclability problems normally associated with fiber-reinforced plastic products.

Solera uses environmentally attractive materials:

  • 99% material is glass and steel, among the most highly reusable and recyclable materials
  • glass includes up to 5% post-consumer recycled material
  • glass in-plant material recycling is 20 to 35% of
  • steel contains 15 to 20 percent post-consumer recycled content in galvanized steel
  • honeycomb acrylic film is 100% recyclable.

Solera is green because of what is not there:

  • no permanent inter-material bonds that impede recycling unlike FRP products
  • no environmentally unfriendly polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polycarbonate materials

Solera reduces the environmental impact of building operations:

Performance:
  • Solera's unique ability to both transmit large volumes of light, and to super- insulate
  • SoleraTM reduces need for electrical lighting and makeup A/C
  • Solera's ER (Canadian net heat flow rating through glazing in heating climates)
    • Example.. an R-20 wall is a net energy loser, with an ER number of -6.22
    • ER value for Solera™ is +15.0, providing a net energy gain
    • specify Solera with spectrally selective glass to lower SHGC, provide cool daylight

Life Cycle:

  • SoleraTM is glass.
    • long-life alternative to conventional plastic-based translucents
    • impervious to weathering
    • no maintenance other than washing
  • honeycomb transparent insulation is inherently UV-stable acrylic
    • behind glass, acrylic will have an indefinite lifespan.
  • Light diffusing veil is glass and inherently UV-stable acrylic
    • Behind glass, veil will have indefinite lifespan
  • 'equilibrium moisture dynamics' is dessicant with an indefinite lifespan. Detailed explanation .." Internal Moisture Management"

Solera contributes to a safe, healthy indoor environment:

  • enhances building environment for occupants with high quality diffuse natural light
  • shadows and bright spots are eliminated.
  • glare is dramatically reduced
  • penetration of natural light into deep interior space is improved.
  • excellent insulating properties improve thermal comfort and reduce condensation
  • no off-gassing after 7 days from date of manufacture.
